Among all the Y2K trends to come back to haunt us, spring’s latest denim resurrection is far friendlier than others in recent memory (ahem, low rise jeans). This season, sand-washed jeans and dirty denim appeared on the most nostalgic SS23 runways, from Diesel to Blumarine, John Elliot, and Rick Owens. And after a co-sign from Hailey Bieber at Coachella, where she sported nothing more notable than a baggy pair of Acne Studios jeans, I was obviously onboard. But I’d argue the trend’s biggest appeal is not in its Y2K origins, but rather how it compliments the era’s antithesis, quiet luxury. Pair it with capsule wardrobe essentials rather than obnoxious naughties artifacts, and you have an elevated, anything-but-boring take on modern dressing.
☞ the brunch plans
Choose a tailored pair of the jeans, then contrast the dirty denim wash with all the crisp, clean pieces in your closet.

☞ the night out
For drinks, dinner, or date night, go for grown up grunge in a sandblasted denim maxi skirt and sophisticated leather pieces.

☞ the work to weekend
Tone the trend down in a complimentary crew neck and sneaker. Consider swapping your footwear for a classic pair of pumps at the office, too.

Coming next month: everything you need for your bachelorette and bridal obligations, I promise!
